While it is important to be aware of frivolous spending and consumerism on Black Friday, it’s equally important to keep in mind the small businesses all over the country who have also been eagerly anticipating this day. They have been hard at work curating beautiful offerings, often partnering with other local small businesses to do so for things like labels, packaging, and shipping materials.

Green Friday emboldens consumers to not shop at all on Black Friday, or to consider their needs and choose sustainable brands if they do need to purchase something that they will use. While also highlighting that the negative impacts of Black Friday, vastly outweigh the financial incentives offered, and the short lived joy of buying something.

In order to unpack and truly get to the bottom of Green Friday, its message, and its impact as a movement, we must first understand its capitalist counterpart Black Friday. Black Friday is well known as a day when purchasing caution is abandoned as consumers the world over are enticed by slashed prices, often buying things they don’t need.
